The Cathedral Church of Christ in Liverpool
Liverpool Cathedral is the largest Cathedral in Britain, and the fifth largest in the world. It is one of the wonders of modern architecture, being built entirely in the twentieth century. With its towering Gothic arches, its massive tower and its beautiful stained glass windows, it is a place of pilgrimage for hundreds of thousands of visitors every year.
The former Poet Laureate John Betjeman wrote: “This is one of the great buildings of the world…the impression of vastness, strength and height no words can describe.“
It is the Cathedral Church of the Liverpool Diocese and the Mother Church of over two hundred parishes on Merseyside and the region. Above all, Liverpool Cathedral is a place of prayer and worship. It welcomes worshippers to its daily services every day of the year.
Cathedral Mission Statement
Liverpool Cathedral exists to proclaim the relevance of the living gospel of Jesus Christ in today’s world. In its own life, it seeks to make real the glory and presence of God in the world.
Its threefold aim is to Offer Worship, Preserve Space, Nourish Humanity.
This involves a commitment to Celebrate the presence and love of God through worship, music and art; to offer all visitors a warm welcome in Christ’s name to the Cathedral and to an understanding of its purpose; to pay special attention to the welcome and needs of young people as visitors and pilgrims; to promote learning, study and spiritual growth; to strengthen the links between the Cathedral and the parishes and community life in the diocese of Liverpool; to maintain and develop the heritage of the Cathedral and its precinct as a witness to the Christian faith, and as a resource for both church and community; to play a full part, together with our sister Cathedral, the Roman Catholic Metropolitan Cathedral, and with our fellow Christians and members of other faiths, in the life of the city and region.
