Liverpool Cathedral...

A great space for a truly inspiring, value day out for all the family

When visitors step through the door of Liverpool Cathedral, most people do two things – they lift their heads and say “wow!” The Cathedral’s awesome scale and beauty never fails to make a lasting impression – together with, of course, the panoramic view of the city and beyond from the Tower. It lays claim to many records – the UK’s largest Cathedral, the world’s highest and heaviest peal of bells, the world’s highest and widest Gothic arches among many. But there is about to be much more.

New visitor centre shopVisitors now enjoy the completed new facilities of a £3 million Visitor Centre. The new shop with a café bar on a mezzanine floor already provides spectacular new views, and we now have much improved toilet facilities.  The Refectory restaurant is open again - completely refurbished with new kitchen, furnishings and lighting.

Great Space logoBut the jewel in the crown is a new attraction, called ‘The Great Space’. Sir John Betjeman famously remarked that the Cathedral demonstrated “the supreme art of enclosing space”.

A new theatre shows a 10 minute HD panoramic film. It includes a cgi ‘fly-through’ the Cathedral and helicopter-shot aerial views of the city, as well as wonderful archive footage of its construction. There are audio tours for adults and children, computer interactive ‘stations’, cases of artefacts previously not on view and the grand finale of a music experience on the high Nave Bridge – an unforgettable sight and sound. The perfect, good value and inspiring family day out.

For some years now, the cathedral has been able to offer over 20 different language versions of its basic, printed, Welcome leaflet (including English Braille), and in early 2007 we were able to improve our facilities greatly with the introduction of the English version Audio Tour of the Great Space to allow visitors to wander at will with both the written and the aural guide to this place. We are delighted to announce that this facility has now been improved upon yet again in January 2008 with the introduction of the Audio Tour also in German, Spanish, French, Italian, and Polish, making it so much easier for visitors from those parts of the world to enjoy their visit even more. You will see from the range and content of all of the sections on this website that the Cathedral is teeming with life and activity. But it is also a place of sanctuary and peace. Whatever the day of the year, there is always a place reserved for private prayer, such as the Chapel of the Holy Spirit. Many also come to light a candle. Should you have any enquiry during your visit, please do not hesitate to approach our staff on the Welcome Desk.

I very much hope that this website helps to prepare you for a visit to our beautiful Cathedral and that you visit us – electronically or in person – time and time again!
