A Marvellous Month at Liverpool Cathedral
May this year has been an extremely busy month for Liverpool Cathedral
We welcomed over 60,000 people to come and see the amazing 23ft spherical installation by artist Luke Jerram. ‘Museum of the Moon’ was part of the ‘Changing Tides’ programme as Liverpool celebrated the ten years since its reign as European Capital of Culture.
Just as the Museum of the Moon was starting its week-long programme, Liverpool Cathedral won the Large Visitor Attraction Awards at the prestigious Liverpool City Region Tourism Awards 2018. Held on 24th May at St George’s Hall, Liverpool Cathedral faced tough competition –Liverpool Football Club Tours and Experience, Cheshire Oaks and Speke Hall.
In the previous week, the late night arts festival ‘LightNight’ returned to the Cathedral. Visitors were treated to a range of activities and installations - from a documentary about the 1981 Toxteth Riots to ‘Compline’ a reflective space for prayer.
The day before Dean’s Sue’s installation on Friday 4th May Liverpool Cathedral was one of the stars of a six-part documentary series - ‘Britain’s Great Cathedrals. Broadcast on Channel 5 and presented by actor, Tony Robinson, it looked at the architecture and the stories and characters behind six cathedrals. The series also featured York Minster, and Canterbury, Salisbury, Durham, and Winchester Cathedrals. If you missed it you can catch-up here.
Dean of Liverpool, the Very Revd Dr Sue Jones said, “I have been Dean for less than a month and have seen Light Night, a moon arrive and the Cathedral winning this fantastic accolade. It confirms to me what I felt when God was calling me here. That the Cathedral is a place for the people of Merseyside and is treasured and loved by those people. We are a spiritual and cultural heartbeat for so many who want to visit this great Cathedral and be in the awesome presence of God. This is testament to the great team we have and the diverse activities we do.”
