Exploring the Sunday Gospel -Third Sunday before Lent

News
-

Today is the Third Sunday before Lent. The Gospel reading is taken from Matthew’s account
of Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount. Here Jesus establishes a new covenant with God’s people, a
covenant proclaimed in the beatitudes. Those who respond to this covenant are called to put
Jesus’ teaching into practice. They are called to be the salt of the earth. They are called to be
the light of the world.
For those of you who wanted to do some thinking and preparation for today’s service during
the preceding week, I invited reflection on the image of salt. In today’s picture from the
illustrated communion book, The Lord is Here, Teddy Horsley is looking carefully to make
sure that they have put salt into his shopping trolly.
Lord Jesus Christ,
you call your people to be salt of the earth.
Make us to be salt in your service,
to the good of your people
and to the glory of your name;
now and always.
Amen.
Next Sunday is the Second Sunday before Lent. The Gospel reading is again taken from the
Sermon on the Mount. Here Jesus invites his listeners to consider the birds of the air and the
lilies of the field. The image to help prepare for next Sunday’s theme is birds. You can find
out more about that theme by looking at the Educational Resources and the Preparation
Resources.
