Liverpool Cathedral shop creates largest nativity set display in the city

Liverpool Cathedral shop has created a seasonal display of nativity sets from around the world – believed to be the largest collection of nativities in the city.
The shop has gathered a range of over 100 different nativitiy sets including Fair Trade, traditional and children’s nativities of diverse styles, shapes and sizes, reflecting the cultures of the countries where they were made. All tastes and budgets are catered for, from snow globes and figurines to full sets of many individual pieces, the price ranges from £3.50 all the way up to £280.
Some of the nativities have come from as far away as Africa, India, Sri Lanka and the Holy Land itself, Bethlehem. There are also nativities made from pottery, bean bag nativities, colour-in nativities and ‘green’ nativities made from recycled newspaper and reclaimed wood. There is a fascinating story behind each one.
Fair Trade nativities include an enameled brass set from Moradabad, northern India, terracotta figures from Bangladesh, a bean bag nativity from the Philippines and a chunky, brightly painted children’s wooden nativity set from Sri Lanka. The shop has had a fantastic response to the nativities, all of which are on display, with people coming along to see the different styles of nativities from around the world.
Kevin Stott, Retail Manager at the Cathedral Shop says that the display is in response to growing customer demand throughout the year: “The range has been steadily growing over a few years now. We are proud to stock such a wide collection from Fair Trade, local, global and traditional suppliers. The choosing of a nativity set is a very personal thing, and can make for a really memorable family experience. It is about finding the right one for you, and we hope that our range gives people that choice. ”
The shop is also displaying the stories behind each of the Fair Trade nativities; allowing people to find out where are how their nativity was made and which communities will benefit. Kevin added: “Christmas is about spreading joy, the Fair Trade nativities are a way of doing that and connecting directly with the makers through the Christmas story, no matter where they are in the world.”
