Liverpool Cathedral to live stream major new organ work for Passiontide

We’re excited to be the first cathedral in the North West to premiere a brand new devotional work that combines prayer with organ music. The work, Via Crucis, will be live-streamed on our social media channels at 6:15 pm Tuesday, 30 March.
The work offers a chance to reflect on the Easter story as it follows the pattern of the Stations of the Cross, a traditional practice in many churches that offers reflections on different stages of the journey Jesus took to his death on the cross.
The service contains a selection of deeply felt, but restrained prayers by Eric Milner-White. These are interspersed with descriptive organ pieces by Philip Moore, which act as musical responses to the words, and range from meditative to more dramatic, harrowing moods. Together, the prayers and music combine to provide a beautifully fresh perspective on the themes of Lent.
At the organ will be Daniel Greenway, one of our organ scholars. Daniel recently gained the coveted status of Associate of the Royal College of Organists. This performance will again show his worth having mastered it in a relatively short time frame.
Lee Ward, our director of music said, “We are honoured to be able to perform this work during Holy Week. In a challenging year for all of us, the ability to reflect on our circumstances in the context of Christ’s story will be an intensely powerful and moving experience.”
Daniel Greenway added, “Via Crucis has been a challenge to learn in a short timeframe but it is so timely to be able to perform this piece next week and helping people encounter the story of Christ in a deep, reflective way.”
