Liverpool Cathedral will close for public worship and private prayer until further notice
From 12 January 2021, we are temporarily closing our building for public worship and private prayer. We have been unable to welcome visitors into Liverpool Cathedral following Liverpool City Region Tier 3 status on 31 December.
We are closing Liverpool Cathedral from 12 January 2021 until further notice, for public worship and private prayer.
Our worship services will continue online with live-streaming, Monday to Saturday, of Morning Prayer, the 12:05 Eucharist and Evening Prayer. We will also carry on pre-recording our 10:30 am Sunday Service. You’ll find information about our online services on our worship pages.
The Dean of Liverpool, The Very Revd Dr Sue Jones said,
“This has not been an easy decision to make. We understand how important worshipping in a sacred building is for spiritual and mental health. But we need to keep people safe.
“With the new strain of the virus and the rapid increase in numbers of COVID-19 infections; we no longer believe that it is safe to gather together for worship. The difficult decision to close for public worship and private prayer has been reached in line with the Government request to stay at home.
“Not only do we have a duty of care to our staff, volunteers, the Cathedral Company and the public. We also must protect the NHS, especially since infection rates have soared in the Liverpool City Region in the past couple of weeks.
“We will continue to review and monitor the situation. May God bless you and keep you safe. We look forward to when we can welcome you back.”
