Welcome to Liverpool Cathedral and to this e-news. Today is Pentecost Sunday, the birthday of the church; it’s the day when we remember and celebrate the third person of the Trinity, the Holy Spirit. From the very beginning of the Bible the Bible speaks of God’s spirit moving in the world. The very first chapter of the book of Genesis says:
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was formless and void, and darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was moving over the surface of the water.
In the Cathedral is a wonderful installation of Peace Doves and Doves have been seen as a symbol for the Holy Spirit. Please do come and spend time looking at the installation and pray for the work of the Holy Spirit in our own time.
A Prayer written by Canon Philip:
O brooding Spirit, in soaring flight over stormy seas, teach us to pray. Carry our cries and hopes to God’s heart. Bring us to firm ground when we lose our moorings. Come, make your home within us. Give us new life. Inspire us. Through Jesus, who laid down his life so that we might rise up, our peace, now and for ever.

Pentecost 2021 – Two Cathedrals Service Online
This year’s Two Cathedrals’ service will be online, due to the ongoing restrictions, an act of worship including voices from across the region, with stories of where the Holy Spirit has been at work in this last year in and beyond the churches. With music from the cathedral choirs, and beginning under the Peace Doves installation in the Well, please join in from home as it is broadcast via the Cathedral Facebook and YouTube channels from 3pm on Pentecost Sunday. No In-Person Evensong this Sunday
As the pre-recorded Two Cathedrals Pentecost Service is being broadcast this Sunday afternoon via our YouTube channel at 12pm, we won't have Evensong in person in the Cathedral at 3pm. This will allow staff a well-deserved break after Light Night this past Friday.
Peace Doves
We are currently hosting a major art installation, Peace Doves, crafted by artist Peter Walker, until the end of August. Over 20,000 white paper doves have been hung from the Well ceiling, each with prayers written on by worshippers and visitors. The installation is accompanied by the art installation, Peace to Ourselves, a large dove laid out on the Memorial Chapel floor, on which all are invited to place (provided) buttons in memory of a loved one. Thanksgiving Service for the Ministry of Canon Myles
On June 27 at 10.30 there will be a service of thanksgiving for the ministry of Canon Myles as Canon Precentor. The original service was postponed because of Covid restrictions so it is good now to be able to mark and give thanks for all that Canon Myles has done in this Cathedral as Precentor, vice-dean and acting dean.

A Choir for Every Age
Between now and September we are looking to recruit more singers to the following choirs: Cathedral Junior Choir (ages 6-11), Gilbert Scott Singers (ages 11-18) and Liverpool64 (SATB choir for adults 18+). All of our choirs rehearse once a week and are now back in-person at the cathedral. For more information on joining any of these choirs please email: stephen.mannings@liverpoolcathedral.org.uk.
