This week’s News from Liverpool Cathedral – a Place of Encounter

Catch up on the latest news from Liverpool Cathedral for Sunday, 31st October
Welcome from Dean Sue
This week we start to look ahead to the season of Advent. We are reminded that we are God’s saints, who help his kingdom of love to come on earth. The Canon Theologian, in preparing for this week’s liturgy, asks us to think about ‘sincere smiles’. In our Gospel reading today, some of those who met Jesus smiled at him insincerely, especially some of the learned religious people. But one of them wanted to know more. His smile was sincere. In response, Jesus pointed him to the great commands of love: to love God and to love one another.
God’s saints are those who are committed to living out those great commands. Today as we look at the world around us I wonder what that looks like in our lives and communities? Who can we smile at to bring joy, encouragement and affirmation this week? Let’s make them sincere smiles!
Lord God,
we are created in your image.
Give us grace
to love you with all our heart,
to praise you with all our soul,
to trust you with all our mind,
and to serve you with all our strength,
that we may grow in your likeness,
and love others in your name;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.
Worship with us this week
Join us in person for 8:30am Morning Prayer and the 12:05 pm Eucharist on weekdays and Saturdays, and Evensong/Evening Prayer at 5:30pm on weekdays and 3pm on Saturdays. Click the following link and look below the main banner of our website beneath ‘Services’ for each day’s in-person service offerings and locations: www.liverpoolcathedral.org.uk/.
The livestreaming of worship is under review, as some of our volunteers take a break, and we await the installation of further kit. As the Cathedral is being used more for large events it is not possible to leave equipment and wires around the building, as was the case earlier in the year.
Nevertheless, the 8:30am service of Morning Prayer (Mon-Sat) and Holy Communion (Sundays) continues to be streamed to the Cathedral Facebook page.
To stream a service on Facebook, follow this link to our Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/LiverpoolCathedral.
Streaming to YouTube will resume when the new equipment is installed.

Sunday Worship
This autumn on Sunday mornings the Choral Eucharist will be joined at 10:30am by a new ministry, based around the Well, aiming to interact with visitors drawn into the building, while the eucharist is being celebrated, using the Exploring the Sunday Gospels material. This prompts a rearrangement of some of the liturgical space. The nave altar has moved to under the Dulverton Bridge, and in that location near the entrance will be the normal focus for the daily 12:05 eucharist. On Sundays at 10:30 the Choral Eucharist will be celebrated at the high altar, and seating has been moved forward and arranged so that it is the visible focal point. A number of seats spaced further apart are available in the Presbytery, up between the Cathedral choir and the high altar. Holy communion will now be offered again in both kinds at the 10:30am service, but there is no obligation for any communicant to receive the chalice if they remain concerned. We hope this arrangement will make good use of the great space we have been given, drawing people in different ways into communion with God.
Prayer Requests
If you would like somebody to be remembered in the Cathedral’s regular prayers please email Verger Keith James at: vergers@liverpoolcathedral.org.uk The prayer list will begin anew every two months, so if you would like somebody to be prayed for by name over a longer period please remember to ask again.
Remembrance Sunday – 14th November
This year the City of Liverpool’s Act of Remembrance will be held in the Cathedral, instead of our normal services. Work at St George’s Plateau means that a different venue had to be found, and the Cathedral is delighted to host this important commemoration. There will be no public access to the building that morning, with military personnel only in attendance inside, but there will be screens outside for those who wish to join in this solemn time of recollection.
At 3pm that afternoon there will be a Choral Eucharist in the Presbytery, and an invitation to remember all those who have died, and all who mourn.
Sunday Lunch-
The Sunday Roasts are available from the Welsford Bistro between 11:30 – 4 pm! There is a choice of 2 meats and a veggie/vegan option as well.
The cost is £11.50 adults and £6.95 for children.
