We pay tribute to Ronald Woan
Liverpool Cathedral remembers with much gratitude the life of Ronald Woan.
The Reverend Canon Myles Davies, Vice Dean and Canon Precentor said:
"Liverpool Cathedral remembers with much gratitude the life of Ronald Woan. Ronald became a Cathedral Chorister in 1931, singing under the direction of Edgar Robinson. When Robinson retired in 1947, Dean Dwelly invited Ronald to succeed him as Choirmaster, a post which he then held with distinction until his retirement in 1982. As Liverpool had no choir school, the recruitment of choristers has always been a significant part of the Choirmaster’s role, and Ronald was able to attract choristers to sing here, to encourage their talents, and very many of them have remained life-long friends. A strict disciplinarian, Ron nevertheless enjoyed the complete loyalty of those who sang for him, and continued to be a strong influence in them, years after their chorister days were over. Ronald and Noel Rawsthorne have died within a few weeks of each other, the last of a great company who had worked for Liverpool’s first Dean, Frederick Dwelly. Our prayers and thoughts are with Doreen and all Ronald’s family at this sad time."
A service of thanksgiving for Ronald Woan will take place at Liverpool Cathedral on Sunday 30th June at 3.00pm.
