Here at Liverpool Cathedral, our education team offer a range of tours, themed tours, workshops, and themed experiences, that can be adapted to the curriculum and education needs of each visiting group. Tours
General Tour:
We offer a general tour of the cathedral with our trained Cathedral guides, many of whom are former teachers. This tour will be tailored depending on the age of those attending.
- Cost: £1.75 per pupil
Curriculum led tour:
We can offer a bespoke tour that is related to your school’s curriculum. Popular choices for this tour have included comparing both of Liverpool’s Cathedrals and exploring key features of a Christian place of workshop.

Self-Guided Tour:
You are also able to do a self-guided tour around Liverpool Cathedral. Although no cathedral guides will be with you, this needs to be booked through the education team to ensure you’re able to make the most of the cathedral on your chosen date.

Themed Tours:
Fantastic Faces:
Suitable from Reception to Year 2, enjoy a face hunt around the cathedral followed by a workshop in making a clay face.
- Time: 1.5 hours
- Cost: £2.50 per pupil
Cruz the Caterpillar:
EYFS and KS1 pupils can enjoy an interactive prayer trail based on the theme ‘special to God’. Follow the footprints, collect stickers in a personal passport, hunt inside the treasure chest, write in green sand, and make a butterfly while finding out why you are special to God.
- Time: 1.5 hour
- Cost: £2.50 per pupil
A sense of place:
Special educational needs pupils can ring a miniature bell, smell incense, taste a communion wafer, look for Derby Mouse, lie on the floor and admire the ceiling. This can be adapted to suit individual and group needs.

Special places, special shapes:
EYFS/reception pupils can follow a trail around the Cathedral spotting different shapes, before making a stained glass window based on the shape of the building.
- Time: 1.5 hours

Workshops:
We offer workshops suitable for various ages and abilities, with many adaptable between K21 – KS2. To attend a workshop, you must also book a tour.
KS1 & KS2:
Stained Glass Window:
Discover the importance of stained glass windows, before each pupil designs and makes their own window to take back to school.
- Time: 1 Hour
- Cost: £2.25 per pupil
Vestments:
Pupils hear a talk about the Cathedral's vestments and have a chance to wear some specially made children's outfits before processing in the Cathedral to the sound of the organ.
- Time: 50 minutes
- Cost: £2.25 per pupil
Baptism:
Pupils up to year 3 will learn about the ceremony and take part in a Baptism using a doll, which they will name and choose Godparents.
- Time: 50 minutes

Icons:
Year 2 and KS2 pupils will see a range of both traditional and modern icons and create their own. The aim is to enable pupils to understand that icons have a hidden meaning which can aid prayer.

Kitty Wilkinson:
Children will have an opportunity to meet Kitty in costume, hear her story and ask her questions. They will also be shown her window and grave. They will make a Kitty Wilkinson stained glass window.
- Time: 2 hours
- Cost: £3.75 per pupil
KS2:
Eucharist:
Year 5 and 6 pupils will be given the opportunity to think about what the Eucharist means, why it happens, and the symbolism surrounding it. They will be able to view some of the artefacts used in Communion services at the Cathedral.
- Time: 50 minutes
Cost: £2.00 per pupil
Tower Experience:
Year 6 children+ can enjoy unforgettable views of the city and even Blackpool’s Big Dipper from the top of the Tower. This experience must be booked with a guided tour.
- Time: 50 minutes minimum

Themed Experiences:
Remembrance:
Our Remembrance workshops will help Year 5 & 6 pupils engage with the realities of life during wartime. As part of the workshops pupils will:
- experience a life-size Anderson shelter
- make a poppy, the symbol of remembrance
- meet Noel Chavasse, two-time recipient of the Victoria Cross
- think about heroes of all kinds
- Time: 9:45 am to 2:30 pm
- Cost: £5.50 per pupil
Advent:
Our Advent workshops will enable each year group to experience the Christmas story with each one directly relating to the RE unit of study. We offer a full day of workshops including a mixture of art and drama activities. Themed days are differentiated for each Key Stage.

Easter:
Each year group can experience a day of workshops exploring the Easter story directly relating to their RE unit of study. Workshops can also tie in with Art and Literacy and we are able to cater this experience for every primary school year group.

Schools Singing Programme
The Liverpool Cathedral Schools Singing Programme works with 12 primary schools each term. Our expert music team delivers fun and first-rate singing workshops each week in school. Each term sees a new music project which culminates with a concert performance at the Cathedral featuring all schools. Find out more about our Schools Singing programme here.
