We are absolutely thrilled to announce the return of a beloved Christmas tradition, The Light Before Christmas, here at Liverpool Cathedral! From 28th November to 6th December, the world-renowned Luxmuralis team will once again transform our magnificent space into a luminous wonderland with stunning projections and mesmerising soundscapes.

But this year, the magic begins even before you step into the main show!

A City Wide Canvas… The Gift Art Project

In a wonderful new collaboration, Liverpool Cathedral has partnered with over 30 schools across the Liverpool City Region and Diocese to launch a unique city wide art project!

Pupils from these schools were invited to create festive artwork based on this year’s theme: The Gift. This inspiring theme encouraged young artists to interpret ‘The Gift’ in any way they saw fit—from a classic Christmas present to the gift of joy, peace, or simply the gift of spending precious time with friends and family.

These vibrant creations will be proudly displayed throughout the entrance, specifically in the Gilbert Scott Suite, setting a tone of warmth and community spirit as you begin your awe-inspiring journey through the Cathedral.

“I am delighted to welcome students from across the city to showcase their artwork in one of Liverpool’s most iconic buildings,” says Yvonne Pearson, Education Officer at Liverpool Cathedral. “By introducing this new element, we hope to inspire school children each year to take part and see their work proudly displayed in the Cathedral.”

We are set to showcase 33 incredible pieces from schools including Garston CE Primary, Trinity St Peter’s CE Primary, Barlows Primary School, St Sebastian Catholic School, and St Patrick’s Catholic Primary, among many others. The pupils themselves will be invited to see their work displayed in this iconic setting!

Unwrapping the Theme

The Luxmuralis theme, The Gift, has been carefully chosen to reflect profound meanings:

  • The Gift of Peace
  • The Gift of Christmas
  • How the Cathedral itself was gifted to the city by the people who built it.

This reflective theme, combined with the joyous art from our local schools, promises a truly inspiring and heartwarming experience for the estimated 30,000 visitors expected over the nine-day run.

Don’t miss your chance to make The Light Before Christmas a central part of your festive schedule this year. Join us in celebrating community, creativity, and the gift of peace and joy this holiday season!

Tickets are selling fast, so booking early is strongly advised to avoid disappointment!
