Sixth Sunday after Trinity – Exploring the Sunday Gospel

Welcome > News > Sixth Sunday after Trinity – Exploring the Sunday Gospel
Posted on July 8, 2026

Today is the Sixth Sunday after Trinity. The Gospel reading comes from the third block of teaching in Matthew’s Gospel (chapter 13) a sequence of parables about the reign of God. Chapter 13 begins with the well-known parable of the sower that Matthew copied from his primary source (Mark’s Gospel), followed by the explanation given for the benefit of the disciples.  The main point of this teaching is to emphasise that those who wish to understand the Kingdom of God must begin by understanding how things work in the natural world which God created.

For those of you who wanted to do some thinking and preparation for today’s service during the preceding week, I invited reflection on the image of farmer. In today’s picture from her book, Autumn, Betsy Bear meets the farmer taking care of his orchard.

Lord Jesus Christ,

you have sown the word of life in our hearts.

Give us grace to nurture the seed,

that we may be fruitful in your service;

today and every day.

Amen.

Next Sunday is the Seventh Sunday after Trinity and Consecration Sunday for the Cathedral. The Gospel reading from Matthew 21 relates Jesus’ disruptive action in the temple at Jerusalem. The image to help prepare for this theme is a House of Prayer. You can find out more about that theme by looking at the Educational Resources and the Preparation Resources.
