Liverpool Cathedral appoints Martyn Noble as new Assistant Director of Music and Organist

Welcome > News > Liverpool Cathedral appoints Martyn Noble as new Assistant Director of Music and Organist
Posted on October 21, 2026

Liverpool Cathedral is delighted to announce the appointment of Martyn Noble to the new position of Assistant Director of Music and Organist, following a comprehensive interview process. Martyn will take up the role in January 2027, returning to the Cathedral where his musical journey began as Organ Scholar.

Celebrating 100 Years of the Grand Organ

His appointment comes as the Cathedral celebrates 100 years of its magnificent Grand Organ, marking an exciting new chapter in the story of one of the UK’s most remarkable musical instruments.

Built by Henry Willis and Sons, construction of the Grand Organ began in 1923, with part of the instrument used at the Cathedral’s consecration in 1924. It was completed and dedicated in October 1926 and, following further developments over the years, remains the largest pipe organ in the UK, comprising approximately 11,000 pipes.

Triumphant Return to Liverpool Cathedral

Martyn spent two years at Liverpool Cathedral as Organ Scholar between 2009 and 2011, before studying at the Royal College of Music. Since then, he has built an impressive career as a musician in London, including appointments as Sub Organist and Acting Director of Music at His Majesty’s Chapel Royal, St James’s Palace. He is also a Fellow of the Royal College of Organists and has performed at some of the country’s most prestigious venues, including the Royal Albert Hall, St Paul’s Cathedral and Westminster Abbey.

A Proud History of Cathedral Organists

Martyn will become the fourth Organist of Liverpool Cathedral since its consecration, taking on a role that will see him continue in the footsteps of Professor Ian Tracey, who retired as Organist after 46 years at the Cathedral.

Liverpool Cathedral’s Director of Music, Stephen Mannings, said:

“I am delighted that we have been able to appoint Martyn to this new role following his interview among a shortlisting of formidable musicians. Martyn has a long history with the organ of Liverpool Cathedral spanning almost two decades. During this time, he has gained a breadth of experience which will be invaluable to his new role in our department. I speak on behalf of my cathedral and departmental colleagues in saying that we are excited to welcome Martyn to be a part of the team.”

Speaking about his appointment, Martyn said:

“Liverpool Cathedral was the first place, and Cathedral, I worked at upon leaving school, and I will never forget the experience of walking out onto the organ gallery, seeing the organ case on the opposite quire wall and looking down the vast expanse of the Cathedral as an 18-year-old Organ Scholar, watching Professor Ian Tracey work his magic on that formidable instrument.

After two wonderful years as Organ Scholar – complete with two CD recordings with my name on them – I moved to London and have spent the past15 years living and working in some incredible places, with some amazing people and musicians.

“My heartfelt thanks go to the Dean and Chapter for this amazing opportunity. It is such an honour to succeed Ian Tracey, and I very much look forward to joining Liverpool Cathedral’s community, working with and supporting Stephen Mannings and the entire music department once again, this time as Assistant Director of Music and Organist.”

We look forward to welcoming Martyn back to Liverpool Cathedral in January and to the next chapter in the story of our Grand Organ.
