For Individuals
Is there a cost?
We charge each participating charity a fee of £75 to abseil. Some charities absorb this cost, others pass it on to their fundraisers.
For individuals, we charge £75 for those who wish to fundraise for a charity not already participating in the abseils – we will ask you which charity this is when you sign up. For those who wish to abseil but not for a specific charity, we ask for £100, of which £25 goes towards supporting Liverpool Cathedral and the £1m worth of annual maintenance required on the building.
Is there a minimum amount that I have to raise for my charity?
This depends on the charity you are abseiling for.
Could it be cancelled for any reason?
The safety of participants comes first. If the weather makes it unsafe for abseiling, we will have to pause events/cancel them.
What happens if the event gets cancelled?
Should the event be cancelled our liability is limited to the refund of event entry fee; we accept no liability for any expenses you may have incurred.
When will I be able to sign up for next year’s event?
We have sign-ups for interested individuals here. We will email you a list of charities who have signed up to abseil, and you can get in contact with them directly.
How quickly do I need to sign up?
In recent years, we have found the event to be very popular so we recommend signing up fast!
Can I walk up on the day and join up?
In previous years, there have been very limited spots available if charity’s fundraisers have been unable to attend. Please do not anticipate that there will be slots available on the day.
I am under 18, can I still take part?
Unfortunately, the conditions of our insurance mean that only those who are 16 and older may take part. Those who are 16 or 17 MUST be accompanied by a responsible person aged 18+ who has the authority to sign their contract to abseil. The charity you are abseiling for may have different guidelines in lines with their own insurance.
Is there a maximum age?
We don’t have a maximum age limit, we do however require you to be in a good state of health.
Do I have to have experience abseiling?
No. A quick briefing will be given to you before you make your way to the platform.
Will I be able to do it with a friend?
Yes! We have two participants abseiling at once and you can request to be paired with a friend or family member. We do ask though that prior to your escort to the platform, you make the staff aware that you wish to go with another participant. This makes the whole running of the day much easier!
Can I do it solo?
Of course! We have two ropes so that we can meet the demand for places but most of the time, two strangers go down together.
How do I know this is safe to do?
The scaffolding is checked before the start of each day’s abseil by an inspector with whom we have worked for many years. Our abseiling teams are highly experienced and will lead you safely through the event.
What should I wear?
You must wear sensible, comfortable clothing and footwear. We highly recommend wearing sportswear. Any clothes you wear must not impede the harness or ropes. Your clothing should be loose fitting and comfortable but not so loose that it flaps around and can get tangled up in ropes or can get jammed in descending devices. Any zips should be completely fastened or tucked out of sight. Please wear shoes with a decent grip as you will be climbing a number of stairs internally.
Do I have to bring anything with me?
As long as you are wearing suitable clothing and shoes, all you need is yourself! All necessary abseiling equipment will be provided.
Can I do the descent in costume?
Yes, as long as it does not impede the ropes etc – if you are unsure please check things that are allowed and things that are not. We recommend bringing back up clothes just in case.
Will I have to register when I arrive on the day?
Yes – you will have signed up in advance and been given a time slot. We need to register you on the day so that we can make sure that you are there for the right time slot – this helps us to make sure that the platform isn’t being overcrowded.
Where do I go to sign in on the day?
Make your way to the Cathedral car park it will be signposted.
How will I get to the platform that I will be abseiling off?
There is a lift followed by a number of steps. Our event staff will escort you to the platform so there is no need to be worried about getting lost.
Which section of the cathedral will I be abseiling down?
The Main Entrance/West Gate is where our abseils take place.
Are there pictures available to purchase?
Yes, we have a photographer who will be taking photos of each participant. These will then be available for viewing and purchase on the ground. They are priced at £15, include a mount, and you can also receive a digital copy if you like included in the price.
For Charities and Organisations
What kind of organisations can sign up?
We only accept applications from charities, CICs or constituted bodies who can evidence that they are raising funds for charitable purposes.
Is there a cost?
We charge each participating charity a fee of £75 to abseil. Some charities absorb this cost, others pass it on to their fundraisers.
Are bulk discounts available?
We used to undertake a bulk pricing discount. Following a review of our pricing and the costs of inflation, we felt the fairest option was to create a single price point for all charities. We will inflate our prices in line with inflation from 2023.
How many slots are available?
In 2022 we had 840 abseils spread across 4 days. We anticipate a similar number year on year.
How quickly do I need to sign up?
In recent years, we have found the event to be very popular with charities, so we recommend signing up fast! We open sign ups in the Autumn for the following year’s abseils. Most slots have been reserved by December of the preceding year. We do have some drop offs around the time of invoicing in February, where perhaps some people haven’t found fundraisers to fill their slots, so we are very happy to add you to the waiting list if necessary – please get in touch if you are interested.
How does invoicing work?
We invoice you in April and June. We are unable to let you abseil unless your account is settled.
