Celebrating International Intern Day: Supporting Heritage & Collections at Liverpool Cathedral

Welcome > News > Celebrating International Intern Day: Supporting Heritage & Collections at Liverpool Cathedral
Posted on July 30, 2026

This International Intern Day, we’re celebrating the passion, dedication and fresh perspectives that interns bring to Liverpool Cathedral.

This summer, we’re delighted to welcome Martha, who has been working alongside Elisa Nocente, Head of Cultural Programme, supporting a range of projects focused on the Cathedral’s heritage and collections.

From researching historic objects to improving public access to our collections, Martha’s work is helping to preserve and share the stories that make Liverpool Cathedral one of the UK’s most remarkable cultural and heritage destinations.

Preserving Liverpool Cathedral’s Heritage

One of Martha’s key projects has been completing an extensive inventory of the Cathedral’s embroidery collection for Art UK.

This important work involved documenting each display in detail, researching the makers, designers and provenance of individual pieces wherever possible. By creating richer records, the project helps ensure these significant works are accurately catalogued and can be discovered by audiences both in person and online.

Liverpool Cathedral is home to an extraordinary collection of art, textiles and historic objects, and careful documentation is an essential part of preserving them for future generations.

Sharing Our Collections with Wider Audiences

Alongside her collections work, Martha has also been researching and writing a new story for Art UK, helping to showcase Liverpool Cathedral’s heritage to audiences across the country.

Art UK plays an important role in making the UK’s public art collections accessible online, allowing more people to discover the remarkable artworks and stories held within institutions like Liverpool Cathedral.

Behind the Scenes of Heritage & Collections

Working with Elisa Nocente, Martha has also supported a variety of heritage and collections projects behind the scenes, contributing to ongoing inventory work that helps maintain accurate records of the Cathedral’s collection.

While much of this work happens away from public view, it forms an essential part of caring for the Cathedral’s artistic and cultural heritage, ensuring it can continue to be researched, interpreted and enjoyed by future visitors.

Investing in Future Heritage Professionals

Internships provide valuable opportunities for emerging professionals to gain practical experience while making a genuine contribution to cultural organisations.

At Liverpool Cathedral, we’re proud to support the next generation of heritage and museum professionals by offering opportunities to work on meaningful projects that contribute to the care, understanding and accessibility of our collections.

On International Intern Day, we’d like to say a huge thank you to Martha for all of her hard work, enthusiasm and dedication throughout her internship. We look forward to seeing where her career in the heritage sector takes her next.
