Welcome to Liverpool Cathedral for this service, as we prepare for the beginning of Advent, the season in which the Church looks forward both to Christ’s coming in his birth and incarnation, and also to his final advent as judge at the end of time.
Christ described himself as ‘the light of the world’. The service begins in darkness, but light will gradually fill the Cathedral as the procession moves from west to east, just as the Word of God brings light into our hearts and lives. Then, at the end of the service, the procession will return, symbolising Christ’s second coming.
The service is structured around the ‘O’ Antiphons, each of which is a name or attribute prophesied about the coming Messiah.
