Honouring Spencer’s Legacy: A New Defibrillator Installed at Liverpool Cathedral

In a heartfelt moment of remembrance, Liverpool Cathedral is proud to announce the installation of its new defibrillator, this one in partnership with The Oliver King Foundation, in memory of Spencer, a beloved young man whose life was tragically cut short by Sudden Arrhythmic Death Syndrome (SADS). Today, on what would have been Spencer’s 34th birthday, this life-saving device has been placed at the Cathedral, a place that holds deep significance for his mum and friends.

Spencer, a vibrant and healthy 31-year-old, sadly passed away unexpectedly on January 28th, 2022, from SADS—a condition that takes the lives of 12 young people under the age of 35 every week in the UK. His loss was sudden and devastating, as there were no warning signs or underlying health conditions. In his memory, his mum has been working tirelessly to raise awareness about the importance of defibrillators and the role they play in preventing such tragedies.

Liverpool Cathedral holds a special place in Spencer’s story. It is where he proudly graduated in 2016, a day filled with joy and accomplishment. His memory is also commemorated with a brick in the Cathedral, lovingly placed by his colleagues and friends, serving as a lasting tribute to his life and the impact he had on those around him.

For Spencer’s mother, knowing that this defibrillator could save lives in his name brings comfort and solace. Each defibrillator installed across Liverpool is a vital piece of equipment that has the potential to prevent the same heartbreak experienced by Spencer’s loved ones. The installation at Liverpool Cathedral ensures that we can offer the best chance of survival to anyone who might suffer a cardiac arrest within our community.

The work of The Oliver King Foundation, along with the ongoing support from families like Spencer’s, is crucial in raising awareness and funds to place defibrillators in as many public spaces as possible. These devices are essential, life-saving tools, and the more widely they are available, the more lives can be saved.

At Liverpool Cathedral, we are honoured to be part of this life-saving initiative, and we are committed to continuing to raise awareness about the importance of defibrillators. In Spencer’s beautiful memory, we are reminded of the importance of community, love, and the impact we can have when we come together to support each other.
