Posted on May 17, 2026

Liverpool Cathedral is proud to announce the appointment of The Revd Melanie Takáč, currently Minor Canon for Worship and Liturgy at Bristol Cathedral, as its new Precentor.

At Liverpool Cathedral, Melanie will lead and oversee the Cathedral Music department. She will support the work of the Director of Music, Stephen Mannings, as well as overseeing a robust school singing programme made up of over 8,000 children from over 40 schools, several choirs and the largest pipe organ in the UK. Melanie will also have an influential part to play in the responsibility for the Cathedral’s mission and ministry.

Melanie has previously served as Assistant Curate in the Horringer Benefice in rural Suffolk, where she served following her ordination in 2022. Before training for ordained ministry, Melanie worked within the Church as a Lay Pioneer in the Diocese of Ely and as a Verger at St Edmundsbury Cathedral.

Earlier in her career, she trained and worked professionally in musical theatre and dance, later teaching dance and fitness in schools and private classes.

Mel is passionate about creative liturgy, sacred choral music, ecumenism and working with young people. Outside church life, she enjoys Irish dancing, hiking, computer games, and spending time with her husband, Peter, and their dog, Link.

The Revd Melanie Takáč, said:

“I am so thrilled to have been appointed as Precentor in such a vibrant and exciting city and Cathedral. I look forward to serving the people of Liverpool, and joining in with all that God is doing in the Cathedral and diocese. Please do pray for me, Peter and Link as we prepare to move, and for the people of both Liverpool and Bristol Cathedral during this time of transition.”

Welcoming Melanie to Liverpool Cathedral, The Very Revd Dr Sue Jones, Dean of Liverpool, said:

“I am delighted that Mel will be joining the Cathedral team in September. Mel brings with her experience in the creative arts. She also brings experience of Cathedral ministry and its worship and we look forward to welcoming her and her husband Peter and their dog Link.”

Commenting on her appointment, Stephen Mannings, Director of Music, said:

“I am delighted that Melanie has been appointed as Precentor at Liverpool Cathedral and I particularly look forward to her working within the music department. Melanie has a great breadth of experience which make her an excellent person for the role, and I’m confident that her many skill sets will be put to good use throughout all that we do musically. We look forward to her pastoral leadership and stewardship across the many different groups of people who access our departmental offering in whatever capacity.”

The Revd Melanie Takáč will be welcomed to the Cathedral on the 12th September.
