Experience the Sun Like Never Before… Luke Jerram’s Helios at Liverpool Cathedral

Get ready to bask in the brilliance of Helios, the awe-inspiring illuminated sculpture of the Sun, premiering at Liverpool Cathedral from Friday 4th April to Friday 9th May 2025.

For the first time ever, the UK’s largest Cathedral will host this dazzling masterpiece by world-renowned British artist Luke Jerram, after having also hosted Museum of the Moon and Gaia.

Special Programme of Events
To complement Helios, Liverpool Cathedral has curated a diverse programme of events, allowing visitors to experience the installation in unique ways—whether through yoga, storytelling, fine dining, family activities, or thought-provoking talks. This also includes this year’s Cathedral Sleepout with The Whitechapel Centre. Sleep under Helios to raise money for homelessness in the city!

Museum of the Moon by Luke Jerram
Gaia by Luke Jerram

Prepare to be mesmerised by a breathtaking seven-meter sculpture of the Sun, offering a scale like no other. At 1:200 million, every centimetre of Helios represents 2000km of the Sun’s surface. Witness intricate details like sunspots, spicules, and solar flares—features that are usually millions of miles away!

This isn’t just art—it’s an experience. With a custom surround sound composition blending solar sounds, NASA mission recordings, and uplifting music, you’ll feel connected to the Sun’s power, warmth, and significance.

Liverpool Cathedral is proud to be the first venue in the world to have showcased three of Luke Jerram’s celestial artworks. Helios celebrates the Sun’s life-giving power and its importance to cultures and faiths worldwide.

Dean of Liverpool, Very Revd Dr Sue Jones, shares:

“We are thrilled to be the first cathedral to host Helios and to complete the celestial trilogy of Luke Jerram’s artworks here at Liverpool Cathedral. Helios is a stunning celebration of the Sun’s life-giving power and its significance across cultures and faiths. It’s a privilege to bring such an awe-inspiring installation to our community and visitors, reaffirming our place at the heart of Liverpool’s cultural life. We are delighted that Helios will be installed over the Easter period which helps us to reflect on light and the life giving light of the resurrection which brings new life.

We look forward to welcoming everyone to experience this breathtaking artwork in our magnificent space.”
