Liverpool Cathedral Guide Honoured with Royal Maundy Invitation at Durham Cathedral

Welcome > News > Liverpool Cathedral Guide Honoured with Royal Maundy Invitation at Durham Cathedral
Posted on April 14, 2025

We’re incredibly proud to share some wonderful news from our Cathedral community! Brian, our esteemed Head Guide at Liverpool Cathedral, has been nominated to receive Maundy money from His Majesty the King at this year’s Royal Maundy Service on Thursday 17 April 2025, held at Durham Cathedral.

The Royal Maundy is one of the Church of England’s most treasured traditions, taking place each year on Maundy Thursday—the day before Good Friday. During this special service, the monarch presents specially minted coins to individuals who have demonstrated outstanding Christian service and community commitment. This year, 152 recipients—76 men and 76 women, reflecting the age of the King—will be honoured in recognition of their selfless contributions across the Province of York, as well as from Wales and Scotland.

Brian has been selected for his exceptional dedication to volunteering. As well as generously giving his time and wisdom here at Liverpool Cathedral, Brian has also supported the work of Speke Hall and Micah Liverpool, making a real difference in each of the communities he serves. His nomination is a testament to the quiet, faithful service that underpins so much of our life at the Cathedral.

The Royal Maundy tradition is rooted in humility and service, echoing Jesus’ act of washing his disciples’ feet the night before his crucifixion. It is a day to honour those who follow that same example—putting others before themselves with compassion, commitment, and care.

We’re absolutely delighted that Brian will represent Liverpool Cathedral at such a significant and historic occasion, and we know many of you will join us in sending him our warmest congratulations and gratitude. What a well-deserved honour!

Keep an eye on our channels for updates following the service—we can’t wait to hear all about it!
