Liverpool Cathedral’s Revd Dr Mike Kirby Appointed President Elect of the British Institute of Radiology

Welcome > News > Liverpool Cathedral’s Revd Dr Mike Kirby Appointed President Elect of the British Institute of Radiology
Posted on October 20, 2025

Liverpool Cathedral is proud to celebrate the appointment of Revd Dr Mike Kirby as the President-elect of the British Institute of Radiology (BIR) – a remarkable achievement that highlights his unique dual vocation as both a priest and a scientist.

Dr Kirby has been an active and dedicated member of the BIR for many years, previously serving as Chair of the Oncology and Radiotherapy Special Interest Group. He currently holds honorary lecturer positions in Radiotherapy Physics at the University of Liverpool and in Cancer Sciences at the University of Manchester. His research focuses on image-guided radiotherapy, networking, service delivery, and education – all contributing to advancements in patient care.

Commenting on his appointment, Dr Kirby said:

“I am delighted and most honoured to be asked to take on this role – especially following in the footsteps of such an illustrious line of Presidents. I will look to serve the membership, and beyond, to the best of my ability – knowing that all we endeavour to achieve is always ultimately for the better care of our patients.”

The Dean of Liverpool, The Very Revd Dr Sue Jones, shared her congratulations:

“It is really good to have a priest in this role. At Liverpool Cathedral, we have worked hard to raise the profile of science and faith. Mike has been key in this, and we congratulate him on balancing the roles of priest and scientist. We will pray for him as he takes up this appointment.”

This appointment reflects Liverpool Cathedral’s ongoing commitment to engaging with science and faith in dialogue – celebrating the ways in which both can work together to inspire understanding, compassion, and human flourishing.

Congratulations, Mike, on this well-deserved recognition.
