Who are the Friends of Liverpool Cathedral?
The Friends are:
- Admirers of the building
- Its history
- Its community.
Aims and objectives
To promote and support any charitable activities calculated to preserve and beautify the Cathedral, its history and its music.
To work together with the Cathedral Chapter to preserve the building for the future, contributing financially and directly to many varied projects.
- To assist the Chapter in fulfilling its duty of worship
- Contribute to the repair, maintenance, improvement of, and additions to the: –
- Fabric
- Furnishings
- Vestments.
Together with a donation of £224,000 to the 2024 Centenary Appeal.
Achievements include: –
Restoration of: –
- the Holy Spirit Chapel
- the Radcliffe Learning Centre,
- the Lady Chapel Triptych
- the Della Robbia statue
Purchase of: –
- New Copes and Credons
- Four Icons,
- Display Screens,
- Elevated Powered Platform,
- Electric Floor Cleaners and Archive Storage Equipment
Together with
- Sponsoring the Passion Plays and Choral Scholars
- Paying to maintain the West End Garden and to provide flowers for the Cathedral displays
- Supporting the Music Department and the Organ’s refurbishment, restoration, and extension
Financing the Elizabeth Hoare Embroidery Gallery refurbishment
History
The Association was founded in May 1925 – the 1st of its kind in Great Britain – Its initial purpose was to make it possible for ordinary people to contribute to the building of Liverpool Cathedral, the first part of which had been consecrated in 1924. After the completion of the building in 1978, The Association became known as ‘The Friends of Liverpool Cathedral’
Become a Friend
When you become a Friend, as well as benefitting the Cathedral, you’ll receive two newsletters each year, participate in excursions annually and enjoy at least two social events.
You’ll receive an invitation to the Friends’ Festival Evensong Service in July followed by the Annual General Meeting. You can stand for election to the Committee.
Membership of the Friends also entitles you to a 10% discount in the Cathedral Shop (excluding books).

The current annual membership fee is –
- £15.00 per individual
- £25.00 for couples.
- £35.00 for Families

Donations and Bequests to The Friends of Liverpool Cathedral:
Over the years many people have made gifts to the Friends or remembered the Friends in their will and this has been gratefully appreciated.
If you would like to leave a bequest to The Friends of Liverpool Cathedral, you should seek professional advice. The following form of bequest is suggested:
“I bequeath to the Charity known as “Friends of Liverpool Cathedral” a sum of £………… (enter amount in numbers) ……. (then enter amount in words) pounds (free of Inheritance Tax) and I declare that the receipt of the Secretary for the time being of the said Charity shall be good and sufficient discharge for the same – (Charity No 1122672)”.
