Exploring the Sunday Gospel – All Saints Day

Welcome > News > Exploring the Sunday Gospel – All Saints Day
Posted on November 1, 2024

Today the Church is keeping the Feast of All Saints, postponed from 1 November. The Feast of All Saints reminds us that we share in the whole communion of saints, with all God’s people, living and departed. The Gospel reading concerning raising Lazarus from the tomb is a vivid illustration of how we stand and worship alongside those who have gone before us in the faith of Christ. The Feast of All Saints provides a particular prompt to remember our forebears in the local church as well as in the church universal.

For those of you who wanted to do some thinking and preparation for today’s service during the preceding week, I invited reflection on the image of forebears. In today’s picture from his book, Celebrations, Aled is remembering on his birthday his grandfather who was also named Aled.

Lord Jesus Christ,

your saints live to praise you for ever.

Inspire us by the example of all your holy people,

that we may follow in their footsteps;

to your praise and glory.

Amen.

Next Sunday we begin our preparation for the Season of Advent. The Gospel reading reminds us of the call of the first disciples away from their trade as fishermen. The image to help us prepare for next Sunday’s theme is fishing nets. You can find out more about that theme by looking at the Educational Resources and the Preparation Resources.
