This past weekend, our Liverpool Cathedral Choir embarked on an extraordinary journey to Cologne, one of our longest-standing sister cities. It was a truly inspiring few days, filled with incredible music, fellowship, and the warmest hospitality. We couldn’t be more proud of our choir for representing Liverpool with such grace, dedication, and talent. From performances to shared moments with friends old and new, this tour was a resounding celebration of unity through music.
Our journey kicked off with a moving Reformation Day service at Trinitatis Church, where our choir had the privilege of singing and participating in this time honoured tradition. The following day, for All Saints’ Day, they joined forces with the choirs from Cologne and Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral at Cologne Cathedral for a High Mass that echoed with awe inspiring harmonies as well as a great service featuring The Very Revd Dr Dean Sue Jones and Canon Philip Anderson. It was a powerful tribute to our shared faith and a moment that left a lasting impression on everyone there.
Beyond the music, our choirs enjoyed a spirited sports tournament, a chance for all participants to unwind and bond through ‘friendly’ competition. A reception at Cologne City Hall followed, where the Mayor and those from Cologne who made this trip possible extended their warm welcome and support, underscoring the deep connection between our cities.
One of the most memorable highlights of the tour was the Mozart Requiem concert at St. Aposteln Church. We owe special thanks to Lady Anne Dodd (who joined us on tour!), whose generosity brought an orchestra to this performance, creating an unforgettable experience for all in attendance.
Our journey continued with a Eucharist at Melanchthon Church, where a meet and greet offered time for our choristers and community members to connect. We also attended an Ecumenical reception at Haus der Evangelischen Kirche, celebrating our shared commitment to faith and collaboration.
A heartfelt thank you goes to Stephen Mannings, our dedicated Director of Music, whose hard work and vision made this entire tour possible. We’re also deeply grateful to all clergy and staff members from our Cathedral who accompanied us, our friends at the Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral, and every person in Cologne who welcomed us and helped make this journey so meaningful.
This tour shone a light on the strength of our bond with Cologne and left us with memories we will treasure for years to come. Thank you to everyone involved for creating an extraordinary few days that so beautifully honoured our shared history and mission.
Stay tuned for more updates as we continue celebrating this incredible partnership and the music and friendships it inspires! 🙂
