On International Day of Hope, Liverpool Cathedral is reflecting on a story that continues to shape our city – a story of friendship, unity and hope.
Standing together on Hope Street, Dean Sue Jones of Liverpool Cathedral and Father Tony O’Brien from Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral recently came together to share a message of hope from one of Liverpool’s most symbolic locations.
Between our two cathedrals stands the “Better Together” memorial, honouring Anglican Bishop David Sheppard and Roman Catholic Archbishop Derek Worlock. During challenging times for Liverpool, the two church leaders chose partnership over division, working side by side to support communities across the city. Their friendship became a powerful symbol of reconciliation and remains an inspiration today.
Hope That Brings People Together
Hope Street connects more than two magnificent cathedrals – it represents a shared commitment to serving Liverpool with compassion, understanding and kindness.
That spirit of collaboration continues today through the work of Liverpool Cathedral and Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral. Whether through shared services, civic occasions, community projects or simply standing together during moments that matter, we remain committed to building a city where everyone is welcomed, valued and encouraged.
International Day of Hope reminds us that hope is not simply something we feel,it is something we share with others through our words, our actions and our willingness to walk alongside one another.
“Hope” Is the Thing with Feathers
In her reflection, Dean Sue drew inspiration from Emily Dickinson’s much loved poem:
“Hope” is the thing with feathers –
That perches in the soul –
And sings the tune without the words –
And never stops – at all.
Dickinson’s words remind us that hope is often quiet but enduring. Even during life’s storms, hope continues to sing within us, offering strength when we need it most.
The poem goes on to describe hope as something that asks for nothing in return, yet gives comfort in even the darkest moments- a fitting reminder for International Day of Hope.
A Message for Our City
Liverpool has always been a city built on resilience, generosity and community spirit. The legacy of Bishop Sheppard and Archbishop Worlock reminds us that when we work together with respect and compassion, we can achieve far more than we ever could alone.
As we mark International Day of Hope, we invite everyone to take a moment to consider how each of us can bring a little more hope into our families, workplaces, neighbourhoods and communities.
Whether through a simple act of kindness, offering encouragement to someone who needs it, or taking time to listen, every small action has the power to make a difference.
From all of us at Liverpool Cathedral, we wish you a hopeful International Day of Hope.
