Works by Anish Kapoor unveiled to celebrate Liverpool Cathedral’s Centenary!

Welcome > News > Works by Anish Kapoor unveiled to celebrate Liverpool Cathedral’s Centenary!
Posted on August 5, 2024

We are thrilled to announce a monumental event at Liverpool Cathedral as part of our centenary celebrations. From 10 August to 15 September 2024, the renowned artist Anish Kapoor will present his groundbreaking exhibition, Monadic Singularity, marking his first solo show in a UK cathedral and his first major exhibition in Liverpool since 1983.

Anish Kapoor is a world-celebrated artist known for his innovative and thought-provoking works that defy traditional boundaries of painting, sculpture, and architecture. Over the past four decades, Kapoor has created iconic public sculptures such as the famous “Cloud Gate” in Chicago, the “Sky Mirror” in Nottingham, and “Temenos” in Middlesbrough. Now, he brings his visionary art to the heart of Liverpool, transforming our Cathedral’s gothic architecture into a canvas for his extraordinary creations.

The exhibition will feature works spanning the last 25 years of Kapoor’s career, including Sectional Body Preparing for Monadic Singularity (2015), an architecturally scaled sculpture never before seen in the UK. Visitors can also experience a breathtaking kinetic wax sculpture in the Main Space, along with additional works throughout the Cathedral, creating a unique dialogue between contemporary art and sacred space.

In an age of digital distractions, Kapoor’s artworks invite us to pause, reflect, and connect with deeper spiritual dimensions, echoing the Cathedral’s daily explorations of faith and existence. This landmark exhibition is a must-see for art lovers and spiritual seekers alike and stands as a highlight of Liverpool Cathedral’s year-long centenary celebrations.

Anish Kapoor shared his excitement about the exhibition, saying, “To show works in Liverpool Cathedral is complex. It is a space that is alive both with the physical and spiritual. The works I have chosen to show here are situated between body and materiality and geometric immaterial, which I refer to as the non-object. I hope this conjunction of object and non-object in this immense and potent space will be cause for reflection on the nature of religious experience and the human condition.”

The Very Reverend Dr. Sue Jones, Dean of Liverpool, echoed this sentiment, stating, “As we commemorate the centenary of our Cathedral’s consecration, it is a privilege to welcome the iconic Anish Kapoor to our sacred space. Our Cathedral stands as a place of Encounter, and we invite everyone to experience Kapoor’s extraordinary art within our historic walls. This exhibition promises to be a profound meeting of creativity and spirituality, inspiring all who visit.”

This exhibition is made possible by the generous support of Culture Liverpool, the Liverpool BID Company, Lisson Gallery, Boodles, and many others. We also extend our thanks to HM Government for providing indemnity and the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, and Arts Council England for arranging it.

Join us for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to witness history in the making. The exhibition will be open to the public from 10 August to 15 September.
