Liverpool Cathedral Makes Royal Mail’s Christmas Stamp Collection – A First-Class Honour for Our Centenary Year

Welcome > News > Liverpool Cathedral Makes Royal Mail’s Christmas Stamp Collection – A First-Class Honour for Our Centenary Year
Posted on November 5, 2024

We’re thrilled to announce that an original illustration of Liverpool Cathedral will be featured on a First Class stamp in Royal Mail’s 2024 Christmas Special Stamps. This honour is a wonderful way to round off our centenary celebrations, as we commemorate 100 years of our cathedral’s presence in the heart of Liverpool. The stamps, now available as of today, November 5, also pay tribute to the cultural and spiritual significance of cathedrals across the UK.

Marking a century of community, faith, and heritage, Liverpool Cathedral has been an enduring landmark since it first opened its doors on July 19, 1924. As the largest cathedral in the UK and fifth largest in the world, Liverpool Cathedral’s grandeur and history make it a beacon of hope and connection, especially during the festive season. The illustration of our cathedral, created by British artist Judy Joel, will be displayed as an enlargement in the Cathedral throughout Christmas, inviting everyone to see her unique perspective on our remarkable building.

Our Dean, The Very Revd Dr. Sue Jones, shared her excitement: “Having always said we are a first-class cathedral, we are honoured to be this year’s Christmas First Class stamp. This comes at the end of our centenary year of celebrations and is a magnificent way to mark what has been a tremendous year. Royal Mail has chosen a great mix of cathedrals to showcase while reflecting the importance that these beautiful places of worship have in so many people’s Christmas traditions.”

Liverpool Cathedral is a place where history and community intertwine. The Noble Women Window, commissioned in 1908, honours remarkable women, including Queen Victoria, while our war memorial chapel – the only one of its kind in the UK to be integrated into a cathedral’s design – remembers the 40,000 Liverpudlians who lost their lives in WWI.

Royal Mail Director of External Affairs and Policy, David Gold, emphasized the significance of Liverpool Cathedral’s centenary stamp: “Cathedrals are a hugely significant part of our cultural heritage and play an important role in local communities. They offer a space for peaceful reflection and a bit of an escape from the challenges of daily life, which can be especially important at Christmas.”

The full set of Royal Mail’s 2024 Christmas stamps, featuring Liverpool Cathedral and other spectacular UK cathedrals, is available at Post Offices nationwide, by phone, and online at www.royalmail.com/christmas2024.
