If you do not find the answer to your question here, please contact our Education Team who will be happy to help.
Liverpool Cathedral is open to educational groups from 10 am. You can visit all year, although there are restrictions on Sundays, Christmas, Easter and other festivals.
The Cathedral is a living church – please telephone 0151 702 7210 to check availability and what’s on in the Cathedral.
All groups must book their visit so that we can help you plan. At certain times of the year, the Cathedral is very busy. Please ensure you make contact to arrange your date(s) and avoid disappointment.
- Contact the Education Team to check the availability of the day and time you’d like. We will get in touch with you and let you know if your preferred date and time is available. If it isn’t available, we will offer you alternative dates.
- We’ll send you a provisional date with a booking form for you to complete and send back to us.
- We’ll send you a confirmation email.
- Your booking is only confirmed once you’ve received a confirmation email from us.
- Nearer to the date of your visit, you will be sent a payment reference form and a timetable for your day with us.
So we can fund the work of the Education Centre, we make a small charge per child or per session for school visits. Staff and helpers are free

Yes, we have a risk assessment for the Cathedral, the Tower and our workshops – click on the links below to download them. Even though we have our own risk assessments in place, we strongly advise staff/group leaders to make a visit beforehand to complete their own. Risk assessments are included in your booking information.
All groups are responsible for the supervision of their own children. Copies of the Education Centre’s own guidelines for risk assessments are available on request.
Yes, you can download it below.
We require all educational groups to provide a ratio of at least one adult to 10 children. No pupils are to be left unsupervised in any area at any time.
Please note: This does not apply to group of students aged 18+.
Your school office will be sent a payment reference form. You can pay by cheque or BACs. Payment can be made in advance with the booking form, or on the day. Please hand your cheque or cash to the Education Officer on arrival. Cheques should be made payable to ‘Liverpool Cathedral’. We will issue a receipt.
You are warmly invited to do so if it helps. To arrange a preliminary visit simply telephone the Education Department to arrange a mutually convenient date.
Check out Our Programme.
All pre-booked school groups are allowed to eat their packed lunches in the Well area of the Cathedral. (But please respect other visitors and dispose of rubbish in the bins provided). Occasionally, this may be unavailable but we will endeavour to find another space for you.
Please note: The seating for this area is on the steps. During the summer you may want to picnic on the Rankin Porch or in St James Park.
There are public toilets located in the Cathedral. If you do not have a male member of staff to accompany the boys to the men’s toilets, please take them to the ladies’ toilets – do not let children visit the toilet unaccompanied.
See the How To Find Us page.
Please report to the Constable’s Lodge and they will advise you where to park to drop off.
Check detailed city coach parking details in the attachments list on the How To Find Us page.
Please aim to be punctual; if your group is delayed for more than 15 minutes then we will try to keep to your programme, but we may have other groups booked in too.
Please contact the Education Department on 0151 702 7210 or the Constable’s Lodge on 0151 702 7260 to let us know if you are going to be late so that your guide is aware of the situation.
Please inform us of any special needs your group may have that we can make your visit run as smoothly as possible. We have wheelchair access to many, but not all parts of the Cathedral. Portable ramps can be made available on (advance) request to reach key areas on the main floor only.
See our Accessibility page for more details.
Come to the main entrance, where you will be met by one of the Education Team. You will then be shown where you can leave your personal belongings.
The Cathedral Shop sells a wide range of merchandise, books, teachers’ resources and pencils, erasers etc for children as well as gifts.
We can arrange goodie bags if you do not want to take your group into the shop – please contact us for more details.
We recommend that children are supervised and enter the shop in groups of no more than 10 at a time.
Make sure that you have a copy of your timetable with you – it gives details of the facilities you have booked and the times they are booked for you. Make sure that all your group leaders have a copy of this form.
The education staff and volunteers will do their best to ensure that your visit runs smoothly. All you have to do is come along and join in with your group and let us do the rest.
Supervisory staff are expected to remain with their children at all times. The Education Centre usually works with children in groups of 15, so please ensure that you have enough staff present to provide at least one adult per group. Whilst many of the volunteers are able to deal with minor behavioural issues, the visiting group leader is responsible for overall discipline.
Tower tour restrictions
Children under Year 6 are not permitted up the Tower. Only four people are allowed in the lift at one time. We do advise teachers to get parental consent for the Tower, and also to do their own risk assessment. We reserve the right to refuse admission to the Tower if groups do not have enough supervisory adults. Please contact the Education Department for further details.
In the case of an emergency evacuation you should follow the instructions of the education staff. There are First Aid kits in the Cathedral, but medical responsibility can not be assumed.
Schools and other groups are welcome to visit the Cathedral without the assistance of the Education Centre. However, we would still recommend making a booking with the Education Centre, as access to the Cathedral can sometimes be seriously affected if there is a large-scale public or private event taking place which is not otherwise publicised. The Education Centre can keep you informed of any changes.
We charge a fee of £1 per student for self-guided visits.
Unfortunately, due to the late cancellation and non-attendance of some schools, we regret that in the event of non-attendance or cancellation with less than 14 days’ notice, you will be expected to pay half of the visit costs. There is no charge for cancellations due to Government travel or Covid restrictions.
