Today is the Eighth Sunday after Trinity. Today’s reading continues and concludes our journey through the collection of parables organised in Matthew 13. During the past two Sundays we have heard the two extended parables that open this chapter (the parable of the sower and the parable of the weeds). Now Matthew collects a series of shorter sayings about the kingdom of heaven. Each parable makes its own specific point. For example, the parable of the hidden treasure, which is told only in Matthew’s Gospel, points to the experience of the disciples. They, too, have found treasure in Jesus and left all that they had to follow him.
For those of you who wanted to do some thinking and preparation for today’s service during the preceding week, I invited reflection on the image of hidden treasure. In today’s picture from their book, Light, Aled and Sian are searching for hidden treasure in their attic.
Lord God,
your kingdom is worth more
than all human treasure.
Teach us to value your kingdom
above everything else,
that we give ourselves
to your service;
now and always.
Amen.
