Explore Art in a Whole New Light at Liverpool Cathedral’s “Infinite Encounters” Exhibition

Welcome > News > Explore Art in a Whole New Light at Liverpool Cathedral’s “Infinite Encounters” Exhibition
Posted on April 3, 2024

Step into a realm of sensory exploration at Liverpool Cathedral’s upcoming art exhibition, “Infinite Encounters,” running from May 10th to June 2nd, 2024, as part of our centenary celebrations!

Infinite Encounters is a group exhibition welcoming visitors to interact and enjoy an experience guaranteed to bring the senses to life. The show conjures wonder through public participation and collaboration, encouraging the public to actively engage with some of the artworks displayed and to experience art in new ways. Infinite Encounters refers to experiences lived daily, highlighting the relationship with the world around us, inviting us to pay attention to what we encounter every day – whether it is other people, nature, animals, food, and the city. In the digital era, when we spend more time online than interacting with the real world, this exhibition offers the opportunity to reconnect with our senses, and with each other. Visitors will activate their senses through artworks that can be touched, seen, heard, and smelt.

Rasheed Araeen’s Zero to Infinity invites audiences to engage and reconfigure the original structure, sparking collective creativity. Similarly, Liverpool-based artist Frances Disley presents Holodeck Programme 106, welcoming everyone to play dominoes and construct jigsaws together. Myriam Thyes’ hypnotic video Mutable Worlds promises to be a visual journey whilst Neringa Naujokaite’s poetic work Horizon focuses its lens on the urban environment through sound, and on the importance of a young girl’s relationships with the city, friends, and music. A new commission by Frances Disley represents a set of natural elements that co-exist in nature and have a reciprocal relationship. Visitors are invited to enter this protective and scented environment by becoming one of the characters within the space and be hosted by the others. A bespoke menu inspired by Disley’s new installation will be available in the Welsford Bistro, provoking reflections on the food we eat, and its sources.

Infinite Encounters is a unique show that will bring all areas of the Cathedral together, from the Well to the Lady Chapel to the Welsford Bistro.

The show is free to visit, and is curated by Elisa Nocente, Cultural Programme Manager, Liverpool Cathedral.

Or if you would prefer to join in a more relaxed setting we will have relaxed shows for neurodivergent children and adults, and any other visitors with sensory needs who prefer a more relaxed experience. Book a relaxed slot here
