Today is Palm Sunday. The Gospel reading is Matthew’s account of Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem, riding on a donkey. The large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road, and proclaimed Jesus as Messiah, ‘Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord!’ By the end of this week, however, the cry of the crowd will have changed from ‘Hosanna!’ to ‘Crucify!’
For those of you who wanted to do some thinking and preparation for today’s service during the preceding week, I invited reflection on the image of palm crosses. In today’s picture Teddy Horsley has just received his palm cross blessed for him by Bishop Ursula Bear. Teddy Horsley plans to take great care of his palm cross and to place it in his window for all to see.
Lord Jesus Christ,
you rode into Jerusalem with shouts of praise.
Inspire us now to shout your praises.
Hosanna to the Son of David.
Blessed is the one who comes
in the name of the Lord.
Hosana in the highest heaven;
for you are our Lord and Saviour,
now and always.
Amen.
Next Sunday is Easter Sunday when the Gospel reading from Matthew recounts how the angel greeted the women who came to the tomb and said to them, ‘He is not here; for he has been raised, as he said.’ The image to help prepare for next Sunday’s theme is Easter eggs.
