Exploring the Sunday Gospel – Michael and All Angels

Welcome > News > Exploring the Sunday Gospel – Michael and All Angels
Posted on September 27, 2024

Today the Church is celebrating the Feast of Michael and All Angels. The Gospel reading draws on the opening of John’s Gospel. The Prologue to John’s Gospel (John 1: 1-14) establishes Jesus as the creative Word with God in the beginning, as the Word made flesh living among us. In chapter 1 John develops the theme of Jesus linking heaven and earth. Jesus is the vehicle through which God’s messengers (angels) operate.

For those of you who wanted to do some thinking and preparation for today’s service during the preceding week, I invited reflection on the image of angels. In today’s picture from his book Lights, Teddy Horsley recalls the angels who announced the good news of Jesus’ birth to the shepherds who were keeping watch over their flock by night.

Lord Jesus Christ,

you are the eternal Word with God,

you are the creator of all things.

Lord Jesus Christ,

you are the Word made flesh,

you live among us.

Lord Jesus Christ,

you link earth and heaven,

now and always.

Amen. Next Sunday’s Gospel reading returns to our journey through Mark’s Gospel where we find Jesus welcoming children into the kingdom of God. The image to help us prepare for next Sunday’s theme is children. You can find out more about that theme by looking at the Educational Resources and the Preparation Resources
