Celebrating Father Tony O’Brien’s Appointment
It is with great joy that we share the wonderful news that our dear friend and colleague, Father Tony O’Brien, Dean of the Metropolitan Cathedral, has been honoured by Pope Francis and appointed Monsignor. This recognition is a testament to the many years of dedicated service and ministry that Father Tony has offered, not only to the Catholic community but also to the city of Liverpool as a whole.
Monsignor Tony has been a steadfast friend to Liverpool Cathedral, and our relationship with the Metropolitan Cathedral has never been stronger. Dean Sue, reflecting on this announcement, said, “It was so good to hear the news that our friend and colleague Father Tony O’Brien, Dean of the Metropolitan Cathedral, has been made a Monsignor by Pope Francis. A wonderful accolade for a man who has been a friend of Liverpool Cathedral for so many years. The relationship between the two Cathedrals has never been stronger, and as Dean of Liverpool, I have valued my friendship with Monsignor Tony. We work together as much as we can and support one another as we work for this city and region. Congratulations, Tony—so well deserved.”
Bishop John also expressed his admiration, stating, “On behalf of the Diocese, I would like to offer our sincere congratulations to Fr Tony on this appointment. It is a great honour, richly deserved, and a recognition of how highly Fr Tony’s ministry is valued in Liverpool and more widely across the Catholic Church. This comes with every blessing and our prayers.”
We are thrilled to see Tony receive this honour and extend our heartfelt prayers and blessings to him. We look forward to continuing our strong partnership, working side by side for the good of our beloved city.
Congratulations, Father Tony!
