Liverpool Cathedral Awarded Net Zero Demonstrator Grant

We’re pleased to share that Liverpool Cathedral has been awarded a Demonstrator Grant as part of the Church Commissioners’ Net Zero Carbon funding programme, launched in August 2024.

This special grant stream supports cathedrals not only in cutting carbon emissions but in leading the way and sharing learning with others on the same journey.

After three years of planning, research, and cross-team collaboration, we submitted a successful bid to install an air source heat pump to power the underfloor heating in the Well. This system—originally installed in 2019–2020—was designed to be compatible with low-carbon technologies, paving the way for this vital next step in our net zero ambitions.

Once in place, the new heat pump is expected to reduce our carbon emissions by 7.84 tonnes of CO₂ every year.

As a Demonstrator Cathedral, we’ll be sharing regular updates on our progress—from energy savings and behind-the-scenes insight into the installation, to how this work fits into our wider sustainability goals.

We look forward to continuing our journey toward a more sustainable future, and we hope it inspires others to do the same.
