Anish Kapoor at Liverpool Cathedral: A Centenary Celebration

Anish Kapoor, renowned for his iconic works like Cloud Gate in Chicago and the Orbit Tower at the Olympic Stadium in London, has been a transformative figure in the art world for over four decades. This upcoming exhibition marks his first solo display in a UK cathedral and his first return to the North-West since his show at the Walker Art Gallery in 1983.

A Journey Through Kapoor’s Vision

Titled ‘Monadic Singularity’ , symbolising key moments in life: birth, marriage, and death. Liverpool Cathedral, the UK’s largest cathedral, provides a majestic backdrop for this thematic exploration. Visitors will embark on a journey through the cathedral’s stunning spaces, experiencing large-scale installations and intimate works alike.

One highlight will be the massive installation in the Well, confronting visitors with a profound reminder of our existence on Earth. The Main Space will feature a breathtaking wax sculpture, while other works will grace the Lady Chapel and the Ambulatory, creating a dialogue between contemporary art and gothic architecture.

Reflecting on Life and Spirituality

In our increasingly digital and disconnected world, Kapoor’s works invite reflection and a deeper exploration of spirituality—topics at the heart of Liverpool Cathedral’s daily services and worship. Featuring pieces from the past 25 years, some never before shown in the UK, this exhibition is a must-see for art lovers and spiritual seekers alike.

A Historic Moment for Liverpool

This exhibition is not just a milestone for Liverpool Cathedral but a significant event for the entire city. Seeing such a remarkable collection of works by one of the world’s most influential artists is an unparalleled opportunity. To enhance your experience, we’re offering exclusive late-night openings, including a trip up the Tower and refreshments from the Welsford Bistro.

‘Monadic Singularity’ is part of a year-long celebration marking the centenary of Liverpool Cathedral’s consecration in 1924. Join us for the People’s Service in July and many other special events throughout the year.

This exhibition is made possible by the generous support of Culture Liverpool and the Liverpool BID Company, as well as our partners Lisson Gallery and Boodles. Hospitality is provided in partnership with Novotel Paddington Village and Hope Street Hotel. With additional thanks to the Granada Foundation and all our supporters who wish to remain anonymous.

The exhibition will be open to the public from 10th August to September 15th. For more information and to plan your visit, head to the Liverpool Cathedral website. Don’t miss this chance to witness history in the making!

You can head to our Monadic Singularity page to find all the details you need.

We look forward to welcoming you to this groundbreaking celebration of art, life, and spirituality.
