Reflecting on generosity at Liverpool Cathedral
This year Liverpool Cathedral is participating in Generosity Week from 1st – 8th October 2023.
Generosity Week takes place in the Harvest season, so that as we thank God for his generosity to us, we also have the opportunity to think about how we might respond to that generosity. You can find resources from the Church of England for daily activities, reflections and prayers on the theme of Generosity, along with a series of podcasts.
Every day we see wonderful generosity in our Cathedral community, reflecting the Generous God we believe in. Generosity Week is an opportunity for us as Christians to celebrate and further grow these gifts. We invite you to reflect on your own situation, and to think about participating in Generosity Week in one of three ways:
- Review your regular giving
- Make a one-off gift as part of Generosity Week
- Think about leaving a legacy to Liverpool Cathedral
Recent years have been challenging financially to the Cathedral, as we are still seeing lower number of visitors than before the Covid-19 pandemic, and rising inflation, particularly energy costs, is driving up running costs.
Your generous giving ensures that we can continue to keep our doors open to all who wish to enter, and sustain our regular pattern of worship including our Choir, Sepas congregation and new Sunday Fresh Expressions service.
However, we are facing a scheduled deficit this year, and congregational giving has halved compared to 2019. We recognise it is a challenging time for many people across our communities. However if you are able, we hope you will consider participating in Generosity Week this year.
Reviewing your regular giving
We are so grateful to those who give regularly to the Cathedral, as this helps us plan and steward our finances. We would welcome those who would like to increase their offertory gift. For those with a standing order, you will be able to do this by contacting your bank directly.
We are also encouraging congregation members to sign up for the Parish Giving Scheme and give via direct debit. This means you can be assured that your support is taken care of each month, and do not have to remember envelopes or to bring your wallet or purse to services. The Parish Giving Scheme also has an option to sign up for inflation-linked giving, so the value of your support to the Cathedral remains constant. You can also Gift Aid through the Parish Giving Scheme if you are a UK taxpayer.
Make a one off gift to Liverpool Cathedral as part of Generosity Week
Whilst we recognise that the rising cost of living has left many people struggling, we hope that if you are able, you will consider making a one-off gift to support the Cathedral’s mission and ministry.
You can support us by:
- Writing a cheque addressed to Liverpool Cathedral and returning it to us.
- Making a donation online.
- Sending us a BACS transfer, with the reference Generosity Week.

Think about leaving a legacy to Liverpool Cathedral
Make time this October to think about how to make provision for your loved ones, and make a lasting gift to this Christian community. Making a will and updating it regularly is the only way to ensure your wishes are fulfilled, giving you peace of mind that you can continue to support the family, friends and causes you love. It can also reduce your inheritance tax bill.
You can make a free will online with FareWill.
