Today is Trinity Sunday, a day when we are invited to reflect on the mystery of the nature of God. The doctrine of the Trinity affirms that God has been made known in the world in three characteristic ways, as Father, as Son, and as Holy Spirit. The way in which the early Church chose to express this mystery was in terms of ‘three persons in one God’. Today’s Gospel reading, the closing verses of Matthew’s Gospel, reminds us that the doctrine of the Trinity is rooted in Matthew’s account of Jesus’ great commission to the disciples to baptise in ‘the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit’.
For those of you who wanted to do some thinking and preparation for today’s service during the preceding week, I invited reflection on the image of waterfall, an image that stimulates awe and wonder as we are caught up in the mystery of the ever-flowing and life-giving water. In today’s picture, Teddy Horsley has climbed the steep path to visit the majestic Aber Falls in North Wales.
Glorious and Holy Trinity,
you reign over all things.
We praise the Father,
we praise the Son,
we praise the Holy Spirit,
we praise the Glorious and Holy Trinity;
today and always.
Amen.
Next Sunday is the First Sunday after Trinity when we pick up again this year’s systematic journey through Matthew’s Gospel. We pick up the narrative in chapter nine where Jesus holds out a new start to broken people. The image to help prepare for this theme is repair shop. You can find out more about that theme by looking at the Educational Resources and the Preparation Resources.
