Celebrating 100 Years of the Friends of Liverpool Cathedral
– and how you can be part of the next chapter.

This year marks a remarkable milestone in Liverpool Cathedral’s story – the 100th anniversary of our Friends group, first established in May 1925.

Originally known as the Cathedral Builders, this group was formed with a clear and vital purpose: to help fund and complete the building of Liverpool Cathedral. In 1978, when the building was officially declared complete, the group took on a new name – The Friends of Liverpool Cathedral – but their spirit of support and generosity remained unchanged.

For a century, the Friends have been behind the scenes, helping our Cathedral flourish – not just as a place of worship, but as a beacon of community, music, art, and heritage.

What have the Friends achieved?

Over the years, their contributions have been truly transformational. Here are just a few highlights:

  • Helped fund the major organ upgrade in 2024
  • Supported choir tours that have taken our music across the UK and beyond
  • Helped bring large-scale installations to life, including Peace Doves and Threads Through the Bible
  • Funded essential repairs to the building, artwork, and architectural features
  • Invested in specialist tools and technology to preserve and restore the Cathedral
  • Donated over £1 million since 2001

Why become a Friend?

When you become a Friend, your support directly helps us protect and enhance this extraordinary space – for this generation and the next. It’s open to all, regardless of faith or belief – the only requirement is a shared passion for Liverpool Cathedral and its future.

As we celebrate the 100th year of this amazing community of supporters, we invite you to be part of the next century of impact.
