Heritage Treasures Day: Discover the Stunning Stained Glass of Liverpool Cathedral
Every January 11th, we celebrate Heritage Treasures Day, a moment to reflect on the rich tapestry of our shared history and the iconic landmarks that connect us all. At Liverpool Cathedral, we are proud to be home to one of the most magnificent collections of stained glass in the UK, offering an awe-inspiring glimpse into our heritage, faith, and artistry.
Spanning an incredible 1,700 square meters (over 18,000 square feet), Liverpool Cathedral’s stained glass windows are a marvel of 20th-century craftsmanship. Each pane tells a story, blending biblical themes, liturgical significance, and social history.
Among these, the Great West Window is a true masterpiece. Created by Carl Edwards and completed in 1978, it stands as one of the largest stained glass windows in the world. At its heart is a striking depiction of Jesus, honouring the Cathedral’s dedication to “The Risen Christ.” Below, vibrant depictions of the Benedicite hymn celebrate all creation as it sings praises to its Creator.
This window’s sheer scale is breathtaking:
- Over 200,000 individual pieces of glass
- Covering 1,600 square feet (149 m²)
- Three towering lancet windows, each over 52 feet high
Beneath this monumental work lies Tracey Emin’s neon installation, “For You”—a bold, modern complement to the stained glass above. The pink glow of her handwritten words, “I felt you and I knew you loved me,” adds a poignant, contemporary touch, embodying our city’s vibrant cultural spirit.
Another great thing about the cathedral stained glass windows is that they showcase important figures from our past…
The Noble Women of the Lady Chapel
Step into the Lady Chapel, and you’ll find a celebration of women who shaped history. The Noble Women Windows, designed by John William Brown and crafted by James Powell & Sons, showcase inspirational figures like Kitty Wilkinson. Known as the “Saint of the Slums,” Kitty’s fearless work during Liverpool’s cholera epidemic laid the groundwork for public health reforms, including the establishment of the city’s first public baths and washhouses.
These windows, gifted by the Girls’ Friendly Society in the Diocese of Liverpool, are a testament to the enduring impact of women’s contributions to society and the faith that inspired them.
Honouring the Hands That Built the Cathedral
Another must-see is the Laymen’s Window in the Nave, created by Carl Edwards. This unique window pays tribute to the tradesmen, architects, and committee members who built the Cathedral. It’s a powerful reminder of the diversity of talents and unity of purpose that came together to create this remarkable space for worship, reflection, and community.
