Liverpool Cathedral is a place of encounter. You may be a visitor who will encounter a warm welcome inspired by our Christian beliefs. Or, you may wish to encounter God in a deeper way by getting more involved. However you wish to explore faith. We hope this section will help you on your journey to exploring faith and looking up to god.
Explore Your Faith
Here at Liverpool Cathedral, we would love for you to explore your faith and encounter God. Our dedicated and knowledgeable team has developed a range of resources to help you with that encounter.
This page explores some of these resources.
Alpha Course
Alpha is a chance to explore life and the Christian faith in a friendly, open, and informal environment. Whether you’re new to faith, have questions, or just want to go back to basics, Alpha is for you.
Each session involves plenty of time to chat. It’s relaxed, welcoming, and completely free. You don’t need any prior knowledge or experience – just bring yourself and your questions. There’s no pressure, and no such thing as a silly question. Everyone’s opinion is respected.
Alpha course begins on 13th January 2026 and will run for 8 sessions (with a break mid-way). Sessions will start with a meal, and run from 6.30pm to 8.30pm.
Please enter via the Gilbert Scott entrance. Parking charges will apply.

A series of studies on the Gospel of John
Please join us for our ‘deep-dive’ Bible study series on the Gospel of John, which is unique amongst the four Gospels, including for its content and style. It can be accessed by the novice Christian, who will be amazed at the almost journalistic-like recounting of the impact of people who encountered Jesus. And the transformation that flowed. But equally, it is so deep that even the most seasoned and biblically literate student will still find rich depths that they’ve never seen before! It is truly a book for our time, with so many points of application.
Through the term we will be drawing upon some of the wonderful insights of renowned Johannine scholar, Professor David F. Ford; both in his seminal commentary on John and also his Lent Book for 2026, ‘Meeting God in John’. Both are available in our Cathedral Shop. David leads us first to look at the majestic ‘Prologue’ to John’s Gospel, which sets out the road-map through the Gospel and introduces us to the main themes.
There will be two streams, running in parallel:
- Sunday mornings starting on 4th January, 9.00-10.00am, which will be in person in the Cathedral. Enabling participants to attend either the 8.30am Communion beforehand or the 10.30am Choral Eucharist afterwards.
- Wednesday evenings, on Zoom, starting on 7th January, 7.30pm – 9.00pm. Anyone is welcome to join. The Zoom login details will be sent out each week during the course via the discipleship mailing list. All emails are blind-copied, to comply with GDPR.
For more information and to sign up for our discipleship mailing list, please email Canon Neal at: neal.barnes@liverpoolcathedral.org.uk
Later this year, we will be hosting The Bible Course on Zoom. This course is a great introduction to the Scriptures. Rather than looking deeply into chapters of text, this course gives an overview of the Bible from a historical perspective asking, “Who wrote it?”, “How old is it?”, etc.

Sign up to the course by emailing: neal.barnes@liverpoolcathedral.org.uk
Prayer is all about communicating with God. There is no magical formula for prayer, and no special phrases or words are required. We believe that God wants to hear from us, whatever is happening in our lives, and at Liverpool Cathedral, we offer a range of options to join in Prayer.
Baptism and confirmation are milestones in the Christian faith.
Baptism welcomes us into the family of God, and confirmation is a chance for us to affirm the promises we made at baptism and receive the power of the Holy Spirit for the journey to come.
You are welcome to start your faith journey with us at the Cathedral, or take a new leap of faith. Join us for worship on Sundays and speak to a member of clergy about baptism or confirmation.
An initiative from Liverpool Cathedral, working with the St. Mary’s Centre, to offer individuals, households, and churches to encounter the gospel reading set each Sunday through the year.
The material is released in the week before the gospel is read and looked at, so that we can be prepared to hear it, reflect on it, and apply the teachings and example of Jesus in our daily lives.
Each Sunday there is a ‘concrete’ image around which we can think. It contains activities that people of all ages can engage with as we allow God’s word to shape us.
What we believe
Liverpool Cathedral is a place of encounter. We long for everyone who encounters this Cathedral and its many communities to encounter the God who knows and loves them. We believe that God is love and seeks a relationship of love with every person and with the whole creation. God has chosen to reveal that love supremely through the person of Jesus Christ.
